Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick f0ce89b715 net/tstun,wgengine,ipn/ipnlocal: make tstun's peerConfigTable use RouteManager table
Previously tstun.Wrapper.SetWGConfig walked wgcfg.Config.Peers on every
netmap to rebuild its own IP-to-peer table for masquerade NAT rewrites
and jailed-peer classification. Now the tun layer instead consumes the
route manager's shared immutable outbound snapshot directly, via a new
Engine.SetPeerRoutes method: LocalBackend pushes the snapshot (plus this
node's native Tailscale addresses) after every route manager commit that
can change it, and per-packet lookups read the interned PeerRoute
attributes from that table.

When no current peer is jailed or masqueraded, LocalBackend installs a
nil table (gated on RouteManager.HasDataPlaneAttrs), preserving the
per-packet nil-check fast path. The exitNodeRequiresMasq machinery is
deleted: its purpose was populating the table with all peers so that
more-specific entries shadow an exit node's /0, and the always-full
route manager table gives that shadowing inherently.

This is the last step before removing the Peers field from wgcfg.Config.

Michael Ben-Amiandmzbenami 1b2062f3c1 net/tstun: invoke conn25 app connector hook on injected reads
The primary purpose is that return packets from the target app get
properly SNATed on connectors with --tun=userspace-networking, matching
the NAT behavior in the kernel tun path.

This is also necessary but not sufficient for clients of connectors in
userspace networking mode. The hook will DNAT MagicIPs, but won't
actually be sent MagicIPs until conn25 app connector DNS works with
userspace networking.

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick e0677ccc76 net/tstun, wgengine/filter: track UDP flow state for injected packets
Outbound packets produced by netstack (used by tailscaled with
--tun userspace-networking, by tsnet, and by the SOCKS5/HTTP proxies)
enter the wrapper via InjectOutbound{,PacketBuffer} and take the
injectedRead path, which bypasses Filter.RunOut.

RunOut's side effect for UDP/SCTP is to insert the reverse-flow tuple
into the connection-tracking LRU so that Filter.RunIn admits inbound
replies that no explicit ACL rule covers. Skipping it on the injected
path meant a netstack-side dial of UDP would send fine but the reply
would be dropped as "no matching rule". The kernel-TUN path was
already fine because it goes through RunOut.

Naman SoodandGitHub 47333e9487 feature/conn25: recreate transit IP mappings when connector loses them
Mappings from transit IPs to real IPs are stored ephemerally in the
connector, so they're lost on restart. When we send a packet to the
connector with a transit IP it does not recognize, it sends us a TSMP
message saying so (see #19883). If we (the client) know of such a
mapping, we now re-send it to the connector so that a connection can
proceed.

Commit 2b338dd6a8 removed watchdogEngine because it was weird

This adds back a watchdog, but an easier to maintain one that's more

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick f343b496c3 wgengine, all: remove LazyWG, use wireguard-go callback API for on-demand peers
Replace the UAPI text protocol-based wireguard configuration with
wireguard-go's new direct callback API (SetPeerLookupFunc,
SetPeerByIPPacketFunc, RemoveMatchingPeers, SetPrivateKey).

Instead of computing a trimmed wireguard config ahead of time upon
control plane updates and pushing it via UAPI, install callbacks so
wireguard-go creates peers on demand when packets arrive. This removes
all the LazyWG trimming machinery: idle peer tracking, activity maps,
noteRecvActivity callbacks, the KeepFullWGConfig control knob, and the
ts_omit_lazywg build tag.

For incoming packets, PeerLookupFunc answers wireguard-go's questions
about unknown public keys by looking up the peer in the full config.
For outgoing packets, PeerByIPPacketFunc (installed from
LocalBackend.lookupPeerByIP) maps destination IPs to node public keys
using the existing nodeByAddr index.

M. J. FrombergerandGitHub 211ef67222 tailcfg,ipn/ipnlocal: regulate netmap caching via a node attribute (#19117)
Add a new tailcfg.NodeCapability (NodeAttrCacheNetworkMaps) to control whether
a node with support for caching network maps will attempt to do so. Update the
capability version to reflect this change (mainly as a safety measure, as the
control plane does not currently need to know about it).

Use the presence (or absence) of the node attribute to decide whether to create
and update a netmap cache for each profile. If caching is disabled, discard the
cached data; this allows us to use the presence of a cached netmap as an
indicator it should be used (unless explicitly overridden). Add a test that
verifies the attribute is respected. Reverse the sense of the environment knob
to be true by default, with an override to disable caching at the client
regardless what the node attribute says.

Move the creation/update of the netmap cache (when enabled) until after
successfully applying the network map, to reduce the possibility that we will
cache (and thus reuse after a restart) a network map that fails to correctly
configure the client.

Claus LensbølandGitHub 85bb5f84a5 wgengine/magicsock,control/controlclient: do not overwrite discokey with old key (#18606)
When a client starts up without being able to connect to control, it
sends its discoKey to other nodes it wants to communicate with over
TSMP. This disco key will be a newer key than the one control knows
about.

If the client that can connect to control gets a full netmap, ensure
that the disco key for the node not connected to control is not
overwritten with the stale key control knows about.

This is implemented through keeping track of mapSession and use that for
the discokey injection if it is available. This ensures that we are not
constantly resetting the wireguard connection when getting the wrong
keys from control.

This is implemented as:
 - If the key is received via TSMP:
   - Set lastSeen for the peer to now()
   - Set online for the peer to false
 - When processing new keys, only accept keys where either:
   - Peer is online
   - lastSeen is newer than existing last seen

If mapSession is not available, as in we are not yet connected to
control, punt down the disco key injection to magicsock.

Ideally, we will want to have mapSession be long lived at some point in
the near future so we only need to inject keys in one location and then
also use that for testing and loading the cache, but that is a yak for
another PR.

Michael Ben-Amiandmzbenami 5a5572e48a tstun, wgengine: add new datapath hooks for intercepting Connectors 2025
app connector packets

We introduce the Conn25PacketHooks interface to be used as a nil-able
field in userspaceEngine. The engine then plumbs through the functions
to the corresponding tstun.Wrapper intercepts.

The new intercepts run pre-filter when egressing toward WireGuard,
and post-filter when ingressing from WireGuard. This is preserve the
design invariant that the filter recognizes the traffic as interesting
app connector traffic.

This commit does not plumb through implementation of the interface, so
should be a functional no-op.

Will NorrisandWill Norris 3ec5be3f51 all: remove AUTHORS file and references to it
This file was never truly necessary and has never actually been used in
the history of Tailscale's open source releases.

A Brief History of AUTHORS files
---

The AUTHORS file was a pattern developed at Google, originally for
Chromium, then adopted by Go and a bunch of other projects. The problem
was that Chromium originally had a copyright line only recognizing
Google as the copyright holder. Because Google (and most open source
projects) do not require copyright assignemnt for contributions, each
contributor maintains their copyright. Some large corporate contributors
then tried to add their own name to the copyright line in the LICENSE
file or in file headers. This quickly becomes unwieldy, and puts a
tremendous burden on anyone building on top of Chromium, since the
license requires that they keep all copyright lines intact.

The compromise was to create an AUTHORS file that would list all of the
copyright holders. The LICENSE file and source file headers would then
include that list by reference, listing the copyright holder as "The
Chromium Authors".

This also become cumbersome to simply keep the file up to date with a
high rate of new contributors. Plus it's not always obvious who the
copyright holder is. Sometimes it is the individual making the
contribution, but many times it may be their employer. There is no way
for the proejct maintainer to know.

Eventually, Google changed their policy to no longer recommend trying to
keep the AUTHORS file up to date proactively, and instead to only add to
it when requested: https://opensource.google/docs/releasing/authors.
They are also clear that:

> Adding contributors to the AUTHORS file is entirely within the
> project's discretion and has no implications for copyright ownership.

It was primarily added to appease a small number of large contributors
that insisted that they be recognized as copyright holders (which was
entirely their right to do). But it's not truly necessary, and not even
the most accurate way of identifying contributors and/or copyright
holders.

In practice, we've never added anyone to our AUTHORS file. It only lists
Tailscale, so it's not really serving any purpose. It also causes
confusion because Tailscalars put the "Tailscale Inc & AUTHORS" header
in other open source repos which don't actually have an AUTHORS file, so
it's ambiguous what that means.

Instead, we just acknowledge that the contributors to Tailscale (whoever
they are) are copyright holders for their individual contributions. We
also have the benefit of using the DCO (developercertificate.org) which
provides some additional certification of their right to make the
contribution.

The source file changes were purely mechanical with:

    git ls-files | xargs sed -i -e 's/\(Tailscale Inc &\) AUTHORS/\1 contributors/g'

The connstats package was an unnecessary layer of indirection.
It was seperated out of wgengine/netlog so that net/tstun and
wgengine/magicsock wouldn't need a depenedency on the concrete
implementation of network flow logging.

Instead, we simply register a callback for counting connections.
This PR does the bare minimum work to prepare tstun and magicsock
to only care about that callback.

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick cf520a3371 feature/featuretags: add LazyWG modular feature
Due to iOS memory limitations in 2020 (see
https://tailscale.com/blog/go-linker, etc) and wireguard-go using
multiple goroutines per peer, commit 16a9cfe2f4 introduced some
convoluted pathsways through Tailscale to look at packets before
they're delivered to wireguard-go and lazily reconfigure wireguard on
the fly before delivering a packet, only telling wireguard about peers
that are active.

We eventually want to remove that code and integrate wireguard-go's
configuration with Tailscale's existing netmap tracking.

To make it easier to find that code later, this makes it modular. It
saves 12 KB (of disk) to turn it off (at the expense of lots of RAM),
but that's not really the point. The point is rather making it obvious
(via the new constants) where this code even is.

Jordan WhitedandGitHub df6014f1d7 net/tstun,wgengine{/netstack/gro}: refactor and re-enable gVisor GRO for Linux (#13172)
In 2f27319baf we disabled GRO due to a
data race around concurrent calls to tstun.Wrapper.Write(). This commit
refactors GRO to be thread-safe, and re-enables it on Linux.

This refactor now carries a GRO type across tstun and netstack APIs
with a lifetime that is scoped to a single tstun.Wrapper.Write() call.

In 25f0a3fc8f we used build tags to
prevent importation of gVisor's GRO package on iOS as at the time we
believed it was contributing to additional memory usage on that
platform. It wasn't, so this commit simplifies and removes those
build tags.

Jordan WhitedandGitHub f0230ce0b5 go.mod,net/tstun,wgengine/netstack: implement gVisor TCP GRO for Linux (#12921)
This commit implements TCP GRO for packets being written to gVisor on
Linux. Windows support will follow later. The wireguard-go dependency is
updated in order to make use of newly exported IP checksum functions.
gVisor is updated in order to make use of newly exported
stack.PacketBuffer GRO logic.

TCP throughput towards gVisor, i.e. TUN write direction, is dramatically
improved as a result of this commit. Benchmarks show substantial
improvement, sometimes as high as 2x. High bandwidth-delay product
paths remain receive window limited, bottlenecked by gVisor's default
TCP receive socket buffer size. This will be addressed in a follow-on
commit.

The iperf3 results below demonstrate the effect of this commit between
two Linux computers with i5-12400 CPUs. There is roughly ~13us of round
trip latency between them.

The first result is from commit 57856fc without TCP GRO.

Jordan WhitedandGitHub 7bc2ddaedc go.mod,net/tstun,wgengine/netstack: implement gVisor TCP GSO for Linux (#12869)
This commit implements TCP GSO for packets being read from gVisor on
Linux. Windows support will follow later. The wireguard-go dependency is
updated in order to make use of newly exported GSO logic from its tun
package.

A new gVisor stack.LinkEndpoint implementation has been established
(linkEndpoint) that is loosely modeled after its predecessor
(channel.Endpoint). This new implementation supports GSO of monster TCP
segments up to 64K in size, whereas channel.Endpoint only supports up to
32K. linkEndpoint will also be required for GRO, which will be
implemented in a follow-on commit.

TCP throughput from gVisor, i.e. TUN read direction, is dramatically
improved as a result of this commit. Benchmarks show substantial
improvement through a wide range of RTT and loss conditions, sometimes
as high as 5x.

The iperf3 results below demonstrate the effect of this commit between
two Linux computers with i5-12400 CPUs. There is roughly ~13us of round
trip latency between them.

The first result is from commit 57856fc without TCP GSO.

Maisem AliandMaisem Ali 1f51bb6891 net/tstun: do SNAT after filterPacketOutboundToWireGuard
In a configuration where the local node (ip1) has a different IP (ip2)
that it uses to communicate with a peer (ip3) we would do UDP flow
tracking on the `ip2->ip3` tuple. When we receive the response from
the peer `ip3->ip2` we would dnat it back to `ip3->ip1` which would
then not match the flow track state and the packet would get dropped.

To fix this, we should do flow tracking on the `ip1->ip3` tuple instead
of `ip2->ip3` which requires doing SNAT after the running filterPacketOutboundToWireGuard.

Maisem AliandMaisem Ali af97e7a793 tailcfg,all: add/plumb Node.IsJailed
This adds a new bool that can be sent down from control
to do jailing on the client side. Previously this would
only be done from control by modifying the packet filter
we sent down to clients. This would result in a lot of
additional work/CPU on control, we could instead just
do this on the client. This has always been a TODO which
we keep putting off, might as well do it now.

e67069550b ipn/ipnlocal,net/tstun,wgengine: create and plumb jailed packet filter
This plumbs a packet filter for jailed nodes through to the
tstun.Wrapper; the filter for a jailed node is equivalent to a "shields
up" filter. Currently a no-op as there is no way for control to
tell the client whether a peer is jailed.

5ef178fdca net/tstun: refactor peerConfig to allow storing more details
This refactors the peerConfig struct to allow storing more
details about a peer and not just the masq addresses. To be
used in a follow up change.

As a side effect, this also makes the DNAT logic on the inbound
packet stricter. Previously it would only match against the packets
dst IP, not it also takes the src IP into consideration. The beahvior
is at parity with the SNAT case.
