Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick 18a95394df ipn/ipnlocal: shut down old control client before starting new one
LocalBackend.Start previously shut down the previous control client in
a goroutine, letting it run concurrently with the new one. An in-flight
lite map update carrying stale Hostinfo.RequestTags could then be
processed by the control plane after the new client had already changed
the node's tags. Control treats such a request as an invalid tag
transition and expires the node key to force a reauth, so retagging a
node with "tailscale up --advertise-tags" intermittently logged the
machine out.

Instead, detach the old client under b.mu and shut it down
synchronously with the lock released, before creating the new client.
Shutdown cancels the old client's in-flight requests and waits for its
goroutines to exit, so the cancellation of any stale update reaches the
server before the new client sends its first request. Per the deadlock
history in #18052, Shutdown must not be called with b.mu held; this
uses the same pattern as DisconnectControl.

Also teach the testcontrol server to model the control plane's tag
transition handling (including expiring the node key on an invalid
transition and ignoring updates from canceled requests), add an
integration test reproducing the race, and add an ipnlocal test
verifying that Start waits for the old client to shut down.

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick 94af1b00fb cmd/testwrapper, tstest: move test sharding out of test code
Previously, sharding required tests to opt in by calling tstest.Shard,
which used a process-global counter to assign each test to a shard.
This had two problems: most tests didn't call it, so they ran on every
shard (defeating the purpose), and shard assignments were unstable
(depended on call order, so adding a test could reshuffle others).

Remove tstest.Shard and tstest.SkipOnUnshardedCI entirely. Instead,
have testwrapper implement sharding automatically for all tests: when
TS_TEST_SHARD=N/M is set, it uses "go list -json" (no compilation) to
find test source files, scans them for top-level Test/Benchmark/
Example/Fuzz function names, and filters by fnv32a(name) % M == N-1.
The filtered names are passed as an anchored -run regex to go test.

Using go list instead of "go test -list" avoids linking the test binary
twice (Go's build cache does not cache test binary linking).

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick 364b952d62 cmd/containerboot: track peers from IPN bus updates, stop using netmap.NetworkMap
Some tests in another repo were broken by tailscale/tailscale#19607.
This fixes them, by finishing off the rest of the migration away from
netmap.NetworkMap on the IPN bus in containerboot.

Containerboot used to rebuild a full NetworkMap-shaped view while
reacting to IPN bus notifications. Now it insteads has its own
netmapState type (immutable) of exactly what it needs to track, and
sends those immutable values around, making cheap edits of new
immutable values when an IPN bus edit arrives.

This should make cmd/containerboot scale to much larger tailnets now too.

Simon LawandGitHub 988615dbad ipn/ipnlocal,tstest/integration: pause the control client consistently (#19846)
There are two places where tailscaled transitions into a paused state:
1. tailscaled’s controlclient is initially created,
2. tailscale down, or the GUI equivalent, commands it to.

This patch unifies the implementation of both scenarios into
LocalBackend.shouldPauseControlClientLocked to prevent the
implementation from drifting.

The flaky tstest/integration.TestNoControlConnWhenDown test exposed
this mismatch, but only by accident. This patch also changes
TestNode.MustDown so that it runs `tailscale down` and then waits for
the testcontrol server to finish handling any associated /machine/map
requests.

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick aa5da2e5f2 ipn/ipnlocal, control/controlclient: process node adds/removes in constant time
For large tailnets (~50k+ nodes) with frequent peer churn (ephemeral
GitHub Actions workers etc.), tailscaled used to rebuild the full
netmap and fan it out on the IPN bus on every MapResponse that
added or removed a peer. There were two O(N) costs per delta: the
full netmap rebuild + every Notify.NetMap encode to every bus watcher.

This change tackles both:

  1. Plumb O(1) peer add/remove through the delta path. PeersChanged
and PeersRemoved no longer prevent the delta happy path; instead,
they mutate the per-node-backend peer map in place.

  2. Restrict ipn.Notify.NetMap emission to the platforms whose host
GUIs still depend on it (Windows, macOS, iOS) and migrate
in-tree consumers off it everywhere else:

     - Migrate reactive consumers (containerboot, kube agents,
sniproxy, tsconsensus, etc.) off Notify.NetMap to the
previously-added Notify.SelfChange signal so they no longer
have to subscribe to the full netmap.
     - Add ipn.NotifyNoNetMap so GUI clients on "legacy-emit" platforms
that have already migrated can opt out of the per-watcher
       NetMap encode.
     - Gate Notify.NetMap emission on the producer side by a compile-
time GOOS check, so the supporting code is dead-code-eliminated
on Linux and other geese where no GUI consumer needs it.

Re-running BenchmarkGiantTailnet from tstest/largetailnet, which was
added along with baseline numbers on unmodified main in ad5436af0d,
the per-delta cost (one peer add+remove pair) is now ~O(1) regardless
of tailnet size N:

Alex ChanandAlex Chan bb91bb842c all: remove everything related to non-seamless key renewal
Seamless key renewal has been the default in all clients since 1.90.
We retained the ability to disable it from the control plane as a
precaution, but we haven't seen any issues that require us to disable it.

We're now removing all the code for non-seamless key renewal, because we
don't expect to turn it on again, and indeed it's been untested in the
field for three releases so might contain latent bugs!

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick 99bde5a406 tstest/integration: deflake TestCollectPanic
Two issues caused TestCollectPanic to flake:

1. ETXTBSY: The test exec'd the tailscaled binary directly without
going through StartDaemon/awaitTailscaledRunnable, so it lacked
the retry loop that other tests use to work around a mysterious
   ETXTBSY on GitHub Actions.

2. Shared filch files: The test didn't pass --statedir or TS_LOGS_DIR,
so all parallel test instances wrote panic logs to the shared system
state directory (~/.local/share/tailscale). Concurrent runs would
clobber each other's filch log files, causing the second run to not
find the panic data from the first.

Fix both by adding awaitTailscaledRunnable before the first exec, and
passing --statedir and TS_LOGS_DIR to isolate each test's log files,
matching what StartDaemon does.

It now passes x/tools/cmd/stress.

Will NorrisandWill Norris 3ec5be3f51 all: remove AUTHORS file and references to it
This file was never truly necessary and has never actually been used in
the history of Tailscale's open source releases.

A Brief History of AUTHORS files
---

The AUTHORS file was a pattern developed at Google, originally for
Chromium, then adopted by Go and a bunch of other projects. The problem
was that Chromium originally had a copyright line only recognizing
Google as the copyright holder. Because Google (and most open source
projects) do not require copyright assignemnt for contributions, each
contributor maintains their copyright. Some large corporate contributors
then tried to add their own name to the copyright line in the LICENSE
file or in file headers. This quickly becomes unwieldy, and puts a
tremendous burden on anyone building on top of Chromium, since the
license requires that they keep all copyright lines intact.

The compromise was to create an AUTHORS file that would list all of the
copyright holders. The LICENSE file and source file headers would then
include that list by reference, listing the copyright holder as "The
Chromium Authors".

This also become cumbersome to simply keep the file up to date with a
high rate of new contributors. Plus it's not always obvious who the
copyright holder is. Sometimes it is the individual making the
contribution, but many times it may be their employer. There is no way
for the proejct maintainer to know.

Eventually, Google changed their policy to no longer recommend trying to
keep the AUTHORS file up to date proactively, and instead to only add to
it when requested: https://opensource.google/docs/releasing/authors.
They are also clear that:

> Adding contributors to the AUTHORS file is entirely within the
> project's discretion and has no implications for copyright ownership.

It was primarily added to appease a small number of large contributors
that insisted that they be recognized as copyright holders (which was
entirely their right to do). But it's not truly necessary, and not even
the most accurate way of identifying contributors and/or copyright
holders.

In practice, we've never added anyone to our AUTHORS file. It only lists
Tailscale, so it's not really serving any purpose. It also causes
confusion because Tailscalars put the "Tailscale Inc & AUTHORS" header
in other open source repos which don't actually have an AUTHORS file, so
it's ambiguous what that means.

Instead, we just acknowledge that the contributors to Tailscale (whoever
they are) are copyright holders for their individual contributions. We
also have the benefit of using the DCO (developercertificate.org) which
provides some additional certification of their right to make the
contribution.

The source file changes were purely mechanical with:

    git ls-files | xargs sed -i -e 's/\(Tailscale Inc &\) AUTHORS/\1 contributors/g'

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick ac0b15356d tailcfg, control/controlclient: start moving MapResponse.DefaultAutoUpdate to a nodeattr
And fix up the TestAutoUpdateDefaults integration tests as they
weren't testing reality: the DefaultAutoUpdate is supposed to only be
relevant on the first MapResponse in the stream, but the tests weren't
testing that. They were instead injecting a 2nd+ MapResponse.

This changes the test control server to add a hook to modify the first
map response, and then makes the test control when the node goes up
and down to make new map responses.

Also, the test now runs on macOS where the auto-update feature being
disabled would've previously t.Skipped the whole test.

Alex ChanandAlex Chan b7fe1cea9f cmd/tailscale/cli: only print authURLs and device approval URLs once
This patch fixes several issues related to printing login and device
approval URLs, especially when `tailscale up` is interrupted:

1. Only print a login URL that will cause `tailscale up` to complete.
Don't print expired URLs or URLs from previous login attempts.

2. Print the device approval URL if you run `tailscale up` after
previously completing a login, but before approving the device.

3. Use the correct control URL for device approval if you run a bare
`tailscale up` after previously completing a login, but before
    approving the device.

4. Don't print the device approval URL more than once (or at least,
    not consecutively).

Updates tailscale/corp#31476
Updates #17361

## How these fixes work

This patch went through a lot of trial and error, and there may still
be bugs! These notes capture the different scenarios and considerations
as we wrote it, which are also captured by integration tests.

1. We were getting stale login URLs from the initial IPN state
    notification.

When the IPN watcher was moved to before Start() in c011369, we
mistakenly continued to request the initial state. This is only
necessary if you start watching after you call Start(), because
you may have missed some notifications.

By getting the initial state before calling Start(), we'd get
a stale login URL. If you clicked that URL, you could complete
the login in the control server (if it wasn't expired), but your
instance of `tailscale up` would hang, because it's listening for
login updates from a different login URL.

In this patch, we no longer request the initial state, and so we
    don't print a stale URL.

2. Once you skip the initial state from IPN, the following sequence:

    *   Run `tailscale up`
    * Log into a tailnet with device approval
    * ^C after the device approval URL is printed, but without approving
    *   Run `tailscale up` again

means that nothing would ever be printed.

    `tailscale up` would send tailscaled the pref `WantRunning: true`,
but that was already the case so nothing changes. You never get any
IPN notifications, and in particular you never get a state change to
`NeedsMachineAuth`. This means we'd never print the device approval URL.

In this patch, we add a hard-coded rule that if you're doing a simple up
(which won't trigger any other IPN notifications) and you start in the
`NeedsMachineAuth` state, we print the device approval message without
    waiting for an IPN notification.

3. Consider the following sequence:

    *   Run `tailscale up --login-server=<custom server>`
    * Log into a tailnet with device approval
    * ^C after the device approval URL is printed, but without approving
    *   Run `tailscale up` again

We'd print the device approval URL for the default control server,
rather than the real control server, because we were using the `prefs`
from the CLI arguments (which are all the defaults) rather than the
`curPrefs` (which contain the custom login server).

In this patch, we use the `prefs` if the user has specified any settings
(and other code will ensure this is a complete set of settings) or
    `curPrefs` if it's a simple `tailscale up`.

4. Consider the following sequence: you've logged in, but not completed
device approval, and you run `down` and `up` in quick succession.

    *   `up`: sees state=NeedsMachineAuth
    * `up`: sends `{wantRunning: true}`, prints out the device approval URL
    * `down`: changes state to Stopped
    * `up`: changes state to Starting
    * tailscaled: changes state to NeedsMachineAuth
    * `up`: gets an IPN notification with the state change, and prints
        a second device approval URL

Either URL works, but this is annoying for the user.

In this patch, we track whether the last printed URL was the device
approval URL, and if so, we skip printing it a second time.

I've added support for `MachineAuthorized` to mock control, and I've refactored

Alex ChanandAlex Chan 41a2aaf1da cmd/tailscale/cli: fix race condition in up --force-reauth
This commit fixes a race condition where `tailscale up --force-reauth` would
exit prematurely on an already-logged in device.

Previously, the CLI would wait for IPN to report the "Running" state and then
exit. However, this could happen before the new auth URL was printed, leading
to two distinct issues:

* **Without seamless key renewal:** The CLI could exit immediately after
the `StartLoginInteractive` call, before IPN has time to switch into
the "Starting" state or send a new auth URL back to the CLI.
* **With seamless key renewal:** IPN stays in the "Running" state
throughout the process, so the CLI exits immediately without performing
    any reauthentication.

The fix is to change the CLI's exit condition.

Instead of waiting for the "Running" state, if we're doing a `--force-reauth`
we now wait to see the node key change, which is a more reliable indicator
that a successful authentication has occurred.

Alex ChanandAlex Chan e0a77cf41a tstest/integration: expand the tests for tailscale up
Expand the integration tests to cover a wider range of scenarios, including:

* Before and after a successful initial login
* Auth URLs and auth keys
* With and without the `--force-reauth` flag
* With and without seamless key renewal

These tests expose a race condition when using `--force-reauth` on an
already-logged in device. The command completes too quickly, preventing
the auth URL from being displayed. This issue is identified and will be
fixed in a separate commit.

Anton TolchanovandAnton Tolchanov 4a04161828 ipn/ipnlocal: add a C2N endpoint for fetching a netmap
For debugging purposes, add a new C2N endpoint returning the current
netmap. Optionally, coordination server can send a new "candidate" map
response, which the client will generate a separate netmap for.
Coordination server can later compare two netmaps, detecting unexpected
changes to the client state.

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick 761aea3036 tstest/integration: don't require TestMake, stop leaking binaries in /tmp
Previously all tests shared their tailscale+tailscaled binaries in
system /tmp directories, which often leaked, and required TestMain to
clean up (which feature/taildrop didn't use).

This makes it use testing.T.TempDir for the binaries, but still only
builds them once and efficiently as possible depending on the OS
copies them around between each test's temp dir.

This is prep for moving the rest of Taildrop out of LocalBackend, so

Brad FitzpatrickandBrad Fitzpatrick a01b545441 control/control{client,http}: don't noise dial localhost:443 in http-only tests
1eaad7d3de regressed some tests in another repo that were starting up
a control server on `http://127.0.0.1:nnn`. Because there was no https
running, and because of a bug in 1eaad7d3de (which ended up checking
the recently-dialed-control check twice in a single dial call), we
ended up forcing only the use of TLS dials in a test that only had
plaintext HTTP running.

Instead, plumb down support for explicitly disabling TLS fallbacks and
use it only when running in a test and using `http` scheme control
plane URLs to 127.0.0.1 or localhost.

This fixes the tests elsewhere.
